RETINA & UVEA CARE
Retinal Vein Occlusion
Retinal vein occlusion occurs when a vein draining blood from the retina becomes blocked. A branch retinal vein occlusion affects part of the retina; a central retinal vein occlusion involves the main vein. Leakage, haemorrhage and macular oedema can reduce vision, usually without pain.
The amount of vision affected depends on whether a branch or central vein is involved, whether the macula is swollen and how much retinal circulation is impaired. The appearance can evolve after the first visit, so repeat examination is needed even if initial symptoms stabilise.
Anti-VEGF treatment often controls macular oedema but recurrence is common when the drug effect wears off. In more ischaemic eyes, abnormal vessels can develop on the retina or iris and raise eye pressure. Follow-up therefore monitors both vision and complications beyond the central swelling.

1. Symptoms and associated health factors
Sudden or subacute painless blur in part or all of one eye
Distortion or a central dark patch caused by macular oedema
High blood pressure, diabetes, abnormal lipids, glaucoma, smoking or selected blood disorders
2. Assessment and management
Define the occlusion
Dilated examination distinguishes branch from central involvement and assesses haemorrhage, circulation and optic-nerve findings.
Measure macular swelling
OCT tracks oedema; angiography may identify ischaemia, leakage or abnormal vessels.
Treat complications
Intravitreal anti-VEGF or steroid treatment may reduce macular oedema, while laser is used for selected indications.
3. Ongoing care priorities
Medical evaluation
Blood pressure, glucose and lipid review helps identify modifiable vascular risk, coordinated with a physician.
Repeat monitoring
The retina is checked for recurrent oedema, poor circulation, abnormal new vessels and pressure-related complications.
Realistic expectations
Treatment can reduce swelling and preserve or improve vision, but ischaemic retinal injury can permanently limit recovery.
4. Important patient guidance
- Sudden painless visual loss still requires prompt assessment to exclude other emergencies
- Do not stop prescribed blood-pressure or other systemic medicines without medical advice
- Repeated injections may be needed because macular oedema can recur

Every eye is different. The right procedure is the one that fits your cornea, your lens, your retina and the way you use your vision every day — not the one that is most advertised. Technology supports the decision; it never replaces the clinical evaluation.

We are falling short of words but still trying our best to express gratitude. We are truly blessed & thankful for early diagnosis. Thank you so so much and we will do my best to follow your advice to the T. You guys are amazing and we surely recommend this place a modern temple to get your periodic proactive eye check ups or any other ophthalmic issues. Way to go!”
“The staff and doctors were very nice and there was not a very long wait time. Great organization and system in the hospital. All the eye tests were super easy to understand and were done efficiently. The doctors were very gentle and caring giving tissues whenever needed and checking if you are ok. I definitely would recommend this hospital for any eye problems or even just a checkup. My doctor was Dr. Neha Patak, she was extremely soft spoken and really caring. Salik was very gentle when lifting eyelids and that was very much appreciated.”
