RETINA & UVEA CARE
Retinal Detachment
A retinal detachment occurs when the sensory retina separates from the tissue beneath it. The common rhegmatogenous type begins with a retinal tear that allows fluid to pass underneath. Tractional and exudative detachments have different causes and treatments. This is an eye emergency because delay can reduce visual potential.
Age-related shrinkage of the vitreous gel can pull hard enough to create a retinal tear. People with high myopia, previous cataract surgery, trauma, lattice degeneration or a detachment in the fellow eye may have higher risk, although detachment can occur without a known warning factor.
Treatment aims to close all retinal breaks and restore contact between the retina and the eye wall. The operation chosen depends on the tear location, lens status, extent of detachment and scar tissue. Even after successful attachment, macular photoreceptors may not recover fully if central detachment was prolonged.

1. Emergency warning symptoms
A sudden increase in floaters or repeated flashes of light
A dark curtain, shadow or missing area of peripheral vision
Sudden blurred vision, particularly with high myopia, trauma, previous surgery or a detachment in the other eye
2. Urgent assessment and repair
Same-day retinal examination
The pupils are dilated and the peripheral retina is examined to locate tears and determine whether the macula is attached.
Select the repair
Laser or freezing may treat a tear before detachment; established detachment may require pneumatic retinopexy, scleral buckle or vitrectomy.
Post-operative protection
Positioning, drops and activity restrictions depend on the operation and whether an air, gas or silicone-oil tamponade is used.
3. What influences the outlook
Macular status
Visual potential is generally better when repair occurs before the central macula detaches.
Cause and extent
Multiple tears, scar tissue, trauma or proliferative vitreoretinopathy can require more complex surgery.
Healing response
Further procedures may be needed if the retina redetaches or scar tissue develops.
4. Critical precautions
- Seek urgent care rather than waiting for symptoms to settle
- Do not fly, travel to high altitude or receive nitrous-oxide anaesthesia while an intraocular gas bubble remains
- Vision may improve gradually after repair, but the final result varies and some loss may be permanent

Every eye is different. The right procedure is the one that fits your cornea, your lens, your retina and the way you use your vision every day — not the one that is most advertised. Technology supports the decision; it never replaces the clinical evaluation.

“The staff and doctors were very nice and there was not a very long wait time. Great organization and system in the hospital. All the eye tests were super easy to understand and were done efficiently. The doctors were very gentle and caring giving tissues whenever needed and checking if you are ok. I definitely would recommend this hospital for any eye problems or even just a checkup. My doctor was Dr. Neha Patak, she was extremely soft spoken and really caring. Salik was very gentle when lifting eyelids and that was very much appreciated.”
