RETINA & UVEA CARE
Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy develops when diabetes damages small retinal blood vessels. Leakage can cause macular oedema, while severe loss of retinal circulation can stimulate fragile new vessels that bleed or pull on the retina. Early stages often have no symptoms, so normal vision does not exclude disease.
Diabetic retinopathy is graded as non-proliferative or proliferative, while macular oedema can occur at either stage. Small vessel changes may remain unnoticed until leakage reaches the macula or abnormal vessels bleed into the vitreous. Screening is intended to identify treatable disease before vision is affected.
Eye treatment works alongside diabetes care rather than replacing it. HbA1c trends, blood pressure, kidney disease, lipids, anaemia and pregnancy may alter risk. Rapid improvement in glucose control can occasionally change retinopathy in the short term, so medical and eye follow-up should be coordinated rather than delayed.

1. Who needs diabetic retinal screening?
Every person with diabetes, at an interval advised after a dilated retinal examination
Pregnant people with pre-existing diabetes, who may need closer monitoring
Anyone with diabetes who notices blur, distortion, floaters, dark patches or sudden visual loss
2. Assessment and treatment pathway
Stage the retinopathy
Dilated examination and retinal photographs identify haemorrhages, leakage, ischaemia and abnormal new vessels.
Assess the macula
OCT detects and measures diabetic macular oedema; angiography may clarify leakage or reduced circulation.
Treat sight-threatening disease
Depending on findings, management may include intravitreal injections, retinal laser or vitrectomy, alongside medical risk-factor control.
3. What protects vision over time
Systemic control
Blood glucose, blood pressure, kidney health, lipids and smoking status influence progression and should be managed with the treating physician.
Scheduled monitoring
Follow-up is based on retinal stage, not symptoms alone, because changes may progress silently.
Timely eye treatment
Treatment aims to reduce the risk of further visual loss; it cannot always restore vision already lost from retinal damage.
4. Important patient guidance
- Do not wait for symptoms before arranging screening
- Pregnancy can alter retinopathy risk in people with pre-existing diabetes and requires coordinated care
- Sudden floaters, haze, a dark curtain or rapid visual decline needs urgent assessment

Every eye is different. The right procedure is the one that fits your cornea, your lens, your retina and the way you use your vision every day — not the one that is most advertised. Technology supports the decision; it never replaces the clinical evaluation.

Despite weekend and extremely busy schedules and Covid special time, they took utmost care and managed competing priorities. We are falling short of words but still trying our best to express gratitude. We are truly blessed & thankful for early diagnosis. Thank you so so much and we will do my best to follow your advice to the T. You guys are amazing and we surely recommend this place a modern temple to get your periodic proactive eye check ups or any other ophthalmic issues. Way to go!”
“The staff and doctors were very nice and there was not a very long wait time. Great organization and system in the hospital. All the eye tests were super easy to understand and were done efficiently. The doctors were very gentle and caring giving tissues whenever needed and checking if you are ok. I definitely would recommend this hospital for any eye problems or even just a checkup. My doctor was Dr. Neha Patak, she was extremely soft spoken and really caring. Salik was very gentle when lifting eyelids and that was very much appreciated.”
