What is a cataract?
A cataract develops when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, reducing the clarity of light reaching the retina. Ageing is the most common cause. Diabetes, eye injuries, smoking, prolonged steroid use and excessive ultraviolet exposure can also increase the risk.
Common symptoms include blurred vision, faded colours, difficulty driving at night, glare, frequent prescription changes and double vision in one eye.
When should you consider treatment?
An examination helps establish whether cataract explains your symptoms or whether another eye condition contributes. Surgery is usually considered when vision affects reading, driving, work or daily activities. You do not necessarily need to wait until the cataract becomes advanced.
During surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens, called an IOL.

VERITAS Vision System
VERITAS is a phacoemulsification platform that uses ultrasound to break up the cataract for removal through a small incision. Its fluid-management and ultrasound controls support the surgeon during treatment.
CATALYS Precision Laser System
CATALYS supports femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery, or FLACS. Imaging guides selected laser steps, including opening the lens capsule and dividing the cataract before removal. Your surgeon completes the operation and implants the IOL.
Laser assistance is an option for suitable patients; it does not guarantee better final vision for everyone.

Your surgeon will discuss options according to your eye health, reading habits, screen use and driving needs:

Primarily focuses at one distance; glasses are usually needed for other distances.
Toric
Corrects corneal astigmatism; the available vision range depends on its underlying design.
EDOF
Extends the range of focus, typically supporting distance and intermediate tasks.
Multifocal
Provides multiple focal distances, potentially reducing spectacle dependence.
TECNIS Odyssey
A full-visual-range option for suitable patients seeking distance, intermediate and near vision.
Some lenses can produce halos or glare. No lens guarantees complete freedom from glasses.
