RETINA & UVEA CARE
Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) affects the macula, which provides detailed central vision. Dry AMD commonly progresses gradually through drusen and retinal pigment changes. Wet, or neovascular, AMD develops abnormal blood vessels that leak fluid or blood and can cause faster central visual loss.
Dry AMD ranges from small drusen without visual symptoms to geographic atrophy, where areas of retinal support tissue and photoreceptors are lost. Wet AMD is less common but can change more quickly because fragile new vessels leak beneath or within the macula.
OCT helps detect fluid and monitor response to treatment. Patients should report new distortion promptly rather than waiting for a routine visit. Reading aids and low-vision rehabilitation remain useful when treatment has stabilised disease but central function is still limited.

1. Symptoms and risk assessment
Straight lines appearing bent, words becoming distorted or a blurred central patch
Reduced contrast, slower adjustment to dim light or needing brighter light to read
Increasing age, smoking, family history and cardiovascular risk factors
2. How AMD is assessed and managed
Examine the macula
Dilated examination and OCT identify drusen, atrophy, fluid, bleeding or abnormal tissue beneath the retina.
Classify the disease
Further angiographic imaging may be used when wet AMD or another macular disorder is suspected.
Plan follow-up or treatment
Dry AMD is monitored and risk factors addressed; wet AMD commonly requires repeated anti-VEGF injections guided by response.
3. Living with AMD
Home monitoring
Checking each eye separately with an Amsler grid can help identify new distortion, but does not replace clinic review.
Nutrition and smoking
Stopping smoking is important. Specific AREDS2 supplements are appropriate only for certain stages after professional advice.
Low-vision support
Lighting, magnification and rehabilitation can improve daily function when central damage persists.
4. Important patient guidance
- New distortion or sudden central blur should be assessed promptly because wet AMD can progress quickly
- AMD affects central rather than total vision, although severity varies
- Treatment may control activity but does not guarantee restoration of vision already lost

Every eye is different. The right procedure is the one that fits your cornea, your lens, your retina and the way you use your vision every day — not the one that is most advertised. Technology supports the decision; it never replaces the clinical evaluation.

“They say, god is around you! Well, we are so grateful, delighted to meet Dr Veerendra / Dr Anita and their entire staff. I feel blessed that they did everything to ensure to get properly diagnosed. Despite weekend and extremely busy schedules and Covid special time, they took utmost care and managed competing priorities. We are falling short of words but still trying our best to express gratitude. We are truly blessed & thankful for early diagnosis. Thank you so so much and we will do my best to follow your advice to the T. You guys are amazing and we surely recommend this place a modern temple to get your periodic proactive eye check ups or any other ophthalmic issues. Way to go!”
“The staff and doctors were very nice and there was not a very long wait time. Great organization and system in the hospital. All the eye tests were super easy to understand and were done efficiently. The doctors were very gentle and caring giving tissues whenever needed and checking if you are ok. I definitely would recommend this hospital for any eye problems or even just a checkup. My doctor was Dr. Neha Patak, she was extremely soft spoken and really caring. Salik was very gentle when lifting eyelids and that was very much appreciated.”
