RETINA & UVEA CARE
Epiretinal Membrane
An epiretinal membrane is a thin layer of fibrous tissue on the inner surface of the macula. As it contracts, it can wrinkle the retina and cause distortion, blur or unequal image size between the eyes. Many mild membranes remain stable and do not require surgery.
Epiretinal membranes become more common with age and may follow posterior vitreous separation, retinal tears, vascular disease, inflammation or previous surgery. Some are found incidentally and remain mild. The presence of a membrane on OCT alone is not an automatic indication for surgery.
The decision to peel a membrane considers distortion, visual acuity, progression and the demands of daily life. Surgery removes the membrane and commonly the internal limiting membrane to reduce recurrence risk. Retinal remodelling is slow, and perfect symmetry between the eyes cannot be promised.

1. When is assessment helpful?
Straight lines look wavy or letters appear crowded
Central vision has gradually become blurred in one eye
The two eyes perceive different image sizes or reading remains difficult despite new spectacles
2. Monitoring and treatment pathway
Measure symptoms and vision
The effect on reading, driving and binocular function is considered rather than relying only on the scan.
Map the membrane with OCT
OCT shows retinal wrinkling, thickening, cystic change and whether vitreous traction is present.
Operate when justified
If symptoms significantly affect function, vitrectomy with membrane peeling may be discussed; mild cases are observed.
3. Decision points for surgery
Function before numbers
A modest acuity change can still be troublesome when distortion interferes with detailed work.
Gradual recovery
Retinal architecture and vision may improve over months, but longstanding distortion may not disappear completely.
Individual balance
The expected benefit is weighed against surgical risks and the condition of the other eye.
4. Risks and follow-up
- Surgical risks include cataract progression, retinal tear or detachment, infection, bleeding and recurrence
- A membrane does not usually require urgent treatment unless another acute retinal problem is present
- Regular OCT comparison helps distinguish stable anatomy from meaningful progression

Every eye is different. The right procedure is the one that fits your cornea, your lens, your retina and the way you use your vision every day — not the one that is most advertised. Technology supports the decision; it never replaces the clinical evaluation.

“They say, god is around you! Well, we are so grateful, delighted to meet Dr Veerendra / Dr Anita and their entire staff. I feel blessed that they did everything to ensure to get properly diagnosed. Despite weekend and extremely busy schedules and Covid special time, they took utmost care and managed competing priorities. We are falling short of words but still trying our best to express gratitude. We are truly blessed & thankful for early diagnosis. Thank you so so much and we will do my best to follow your advice to the T. You guys are amazing and we surely recommend this place a modern temple to get your periodic proactive eye check ups or any other ophthalmic issues. Way to go!”
“The staff and doctors were very nice and there was not a very long wait time. Great organization and system in the hospital. All the eye tests were super easy to understand and were done efficiently. The doctors were very gentle and caring giving tissues whenever needed and checking if you are ok. I definitely would recommend this hospital for any eye problems or even just a checkup. My doctor was Dr. Neha Patak, she was extremely soft spoken and really caring. Salik was very gentle when lifting eyelids and that was very much appreciated.”
