RETINA & UVEA CARE

Vitrectomy

Vitrectomy is microsurgery in which the vitreous gel is removed through small ports in the white part of the eye, allowing access to the retina. It may be used for retinal detachment, non-clearing vitreous haemorrhage, macular hole, significant epiretinal membrane, advanced diabetic eye disease or selected infections and injuries.

During vitrectomy, infusion maintains the eye's shape while illumination and fine instruments allow the surgeon to remove gel, blood or scar tissue. Endolaser, membrane peeling, drainage of subretinal fluid or internal tamponade may be added according to the retinal problem.

Recovery instructions vary more by the treated disease and tamponade than by the incision size. A gas bubble absorbs naturally, whereas silicone oil may remain longer and sometimes requires another operation. The retina can be anatomically stable before vision reaches its final level.

Vitrectomy creates controlled access to the retina through small ports in the eye wall.

1. When may vitrectomy be discussed?

Retinal detachment or traction threatening the macula

Vitreous haemorrhage that obscures vision or prevents retinal treatment

Macular hole, symptomatic epiretinal membrane or another disorder requiring access to the retinal surface

2. Planning and surgical pathway

  1. Define the surgical goal

Examination, OCT, ultrasound or angiography establishes the retinal problem and any combined lens considerations.

  2. Treat through small ports

The surgeon removes vitreous, controls bleeding and may peel membranes, drain fluid, apply laser or repair retinal breaks.

  3. Use internal support when needed

Air, gas or silicone oil may support the retina; each requires specific positioning, travel and follow-up advice.

3. Recovery in patient terms

Vision is initially blurred

Drops, pupil dilation, inflammation and an internal bubble can limit early vision.

Positioning is diagnosis-specific

Face-down or side positioning may be prescribed to place a bubble against the treated area.

Further care may be needed

Silicone oil may require later removal, and cataract commonly progresses after surgery in a natural-lens eye.

4. Risks and precautions

  • Risks include infection, bleeding, raised or low eye pressure, cataract, retinal tear or redetachment and need for further surgery
  • No flying, high-altitude travel or nitrous-oxide anaesthesia is permitted while a gas bubble remains
  • Visual recovery depends on the original retinal disease and may continue for weeks or months

Every eye is different. The right procedure is the one that fits your cornea, your lens, your retina and the way you use your vision every day — not the one that is most advertised. Technology supports the decision; it never replaces the clinical evaluation.

“They say, god is around you! Well, we are so grateful, delighted to meet Dr Veerendra / Dr Anita and their entire staff. I feel blessed that they did everything to ensure to get properly diagnosed. Despite weekend and extremely busy schedules and Covid special time, they took utmost care and managed competing priorities. We are falling short of words but still trying our best to express gratitude. We are truly blessed & thankful for early diagnosis. Thank you so so much and we will do my best to follow your advice to the T. You guys are amazing and we surely recommend this place a modern temple to get your periodic proactive eye check ups or any other ophthalmic issues. Way to go!”

“The staff and doctors were very nice and there was not a very long wait time. Great organization and system in the hospital. All the eye tests were super easy to understand and were done efficiently. The doctors were very gentle and caring giving tissues whenever needed and checking if you are ok. I definitely would recommend this hospital for any eye problems or even just a checkup. My doctor was Dr. Neha Patak, she was extremely soft spoken and really caring. Salik was very gentle when lifting eyelids and that was very much appreciated.”
