Keratoconus Treatment at Perfect Vision Laser Eye Hospital, Jaipur

Frequent changes in spectacle power, ghost images or vision that remains blurred despite new glasses may need a detailed corneal examination.

At Perfect Vision Laser Eye Hospital – Dr. Virendra Laser Phaco Surgery Centre, Jaipur, keratoconus care focuses on identifying corneal changes, assessing progression and selecting treatment suited to each eye.

What is keratoconus?

Keratoconus is a condition in which the cornea—the transparent front surface of the eye—gradually thins and develops an irregular, cone-like shape. This affects how light focuses, causing blurred or distorted vision.

It commonly begins during the teenage years or early adulthood. Both eyes may be affected differently, and the rate of progression varies.

Symptoms and patient concerns

  • Blurred or distorted vision.
  • Frequent changes in spectacle power, particularly cylindrical power.
  • Difficulty seeing clearly even with glasses.
  • Glare and increased light sensitivity.
  • Ghosting or multiple images around objects.
  • Difficulty with night-time vision.

How is keratoconus diagnosed?

Assessment includes vision testing, refraction and examination of the cornea. Corneal topography or tomography maps its shape, while pachymetry measures thickness.

Comparing scans over time helps determine whether the condition is progressing. Previous prescriptions and reports are useful during your consultation.

Treatment options

Treatment has two main goals: slowing further corneal weakening and improving usable vision. Some patients need a combination of approaches.

1. Spectacles and specialised contact lenses

Glasses or soft contact lenses may help in early disease. When the corneal shape becomes more irregular, rigid gas-permeable, hybrid or scleral lenses may provide better vision.

Scleral lenses vault over the cornea, creating a smooth optical surface. Contact lenses improve vision but do not stop keratoconus progression.

2. Corneal collagen cross-linking — C3R / CXL

Cross-linking uses riboflavin, a form of vitamin B2, and controlled ultraviolet-A light to strengthen corneal tissue.

Its main purpose is to slow or stop progressive keratoconus. It does not guarantee clearer vision or remove the need for glasses or contact lenses. Suitability depends on corneal thickness, disease progression and other examination findings.

3. Intrastromal corneal ring segments — ICRS

Small curved implants are placed within the cornea to improve its shape in selected patients. They may improve vision or contact-lens tolerance.

Rings do not replace cross-linking when progression requires treatment. Although they can be removed, removal does not guarantee restoration of the original corneal shape.

4. Implantable Collamer Lens — ICL

An ICL may help selected patients with stable keratoconus and a remaining prescription that can be adequately corrected optically.

It does not strengthen the cornea or correct all irregular distortion. Detailed assessment is essential before considering implantation.

5. Corneal transplantation

Advanced disease with significant scarring or inadequate vision despite other measures may require transplantation.

Options include deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), which preserves the inner corneal layer, or full-thickness transplantation, depending on the eye’s condition.

Recovery and ongoing care

Recovery depends on the treatment. After cross-linking, discomfort, light sensitivity and blurred vision may occur while the surface heals. Procedures carry risks, including infection, haze or delayed healing; your surgeon will explain those relevant to your treatment.

Avoid rubbing your eyes, seek treatment for allergies and follow contact-lens hygiene instructions. Regular examinations remain important even when vision feels stable.
