RETINA & UVEA CARE
Intravitreal Injections
An intravitreal injection places a small dose of medicine into the vitreous cavity so it can act close to the retina. Anti-VEGF medicines are commonly used for wet AMD, diabetic macular oedema and retinal vein occlusion; corticosteroids or other medicines are selected for particular diagnoses.
Before injection, the eye and surrounding skin are cleaned with an effective antiseptic and the eyelids are kept apart. The injection enters through the pars plana, avoiding the lens and central retina. The procedure itself is brief, although preparation and safety checks take longer.
A moving air bubble or small dark specks can be noticed briefly afterwards. Mild surface irritation is different from the increasing pain, redness and visual decline of possible endophthalmitis. Patients must have a clear route for urgent review because early treatment of infection is critical.

1. Why might an injection be advised?
Fluid or bleeding from abnormal retinal vessels
Macular oedema caused by diabetes, vein occlusion or inflammation
An infection or inflammatory condition requiring medicine within the eye, using diagnosis-specific treatment
2. What happens during treatment
Confirm the plan
The diagnosis, medicine, eye and treatment schedule are checked; OCT often provides the baseline for response.
Sterile preparation
Local anaesthetic and antiseptic are used, and the medicine is delivered through the white part of the eye away from the lens.
Monitor response
Vision, eye pressure and OCT findings guide whether further injections, a different interval or another treatment is needed.
3. What to expect afterwards
Brief irritation
Grittiness, watering, a small surface blood spot or temporary floaters can occur.
Repeated treatment
Many retinal diseases are controlled rather than permanently cured, so a loading course or ongoing injections may be advised.
Rare emergency
Increasing pain, marked redness, light sensitivity or worsening vision can indicate infection and requires immediate review.
4. Safety and aftercare
- Do not rub the eye and follow the team's instructions about drops, bathing and return visits
- Serious risks are uncommon but include endophthalmitis, retinal tear or detachment, bleeding, raised pressure and lens injury
- The medicine, frequency and stopping criteria depend on diagnosis and individual response

Every eye is different. The right procedure is the one that fits your cornea, your lens, your retina and the way you use your vision every day — not the one that is most advertised. Technology supports the decision; it never replaces the clinical evaluation.

“They say, god is around you! Well, we are so grateful, delighted to meet Dr Veerendra / Dr Anita and their entire staff. I feel blessed that they did everything to ensure to get properly diagnosed. Despite weekend and extremely busy schedules and Covid special time, they took utmost care and managed competing priorities. We are falling short of words but still trying our best to express gratitude. We are truly blessed & thankful for early diagnosis. Thank you so so much and we will do my best to follow your advice to the T. You guys are amazing and we surely recommend this place a modern temple to get your periodic proactive eye check ups or any other ophthalmic issues. Way to go!”
“The staff and doctors were very nice and there was not a very long wait time. Great organization and system in the hospital. All the eye tests were super easy to understand and were done efficiently. The doctors were very gentle and caring giving tissues whenever needed and checking if you are ok. I definitely would recommend this hospital for any eye problems or even just a checkup. My doctor was Dr. Neha Patak, she was extremely soft spoken and really caring. Salik was very gentle when lifting eyelids and that was very much appreciated.”
