NEURO-OPHTHALMOLOGY

Unexplained Visual Loss

Unexplained visual loss describes reduced sight not accounted for by spectacle power, cataract or an obvious retinal finding at the initial examination. It may affect central clarity, colour, contrast or side vision, and may begin suddenly or progress slowly. The term describes a starting point for investigation, not a final diagnosis.

Patients may notice dimness, missing patches, washed-out colours, difficulty reading or navigating, or a difference between the two eyes. The pattern and timing matter. Pain, headache, flashing lights, weakness, medication changes and previous neurological or systemic illness should be discussed.

Assessment and diagnosis

A systematic review confirms refraction and examines the cornea, lens, retina, optic nerve, pupils and eye movements. Visual fields and optical coherence tomography may reveal subtle pathway or retinal changes. When needed, MRI of the brain and orbits, selected blood tests or electrical response testing can investigate causes not visible on examination.

Treatment and practical care

Management follows the diagnosis and may involve urgent medical treatment, monitoring, coordination with neurology or another specialty, or low-vision support. If tests remain inconclusive, careful follow-up is preferable to unproven treatment. Functional visual symptoms are genuine and require a positive, respectful diagnosis after appropriate assessment.

Follow-up and expectations

Previous prescriptions, scans and reports help establish whether vision has changed. Repeat fields or imaging may be needed because some conditions evolve and early tests can be normal. Patients should report new symptoms rather than wait for a planned review.

Risks and limitations

Even comprehensive testing does not always identify a cause immediately, and some visual loss can be permanent. Test results depend on attention and natural measurement variation, so several findings are interpreted together. No online description can safely determine the urgency of sudden loss.

Every eye is different. The right procedure is the one that fits your cornea, your lens, your retina and the way you use your vision every day — not the one that is most advertised. Technology supports the decision; it never replaces the clinical evaluation.

“They say, god is around you! Well, we are so grateful, delighted to meet Dr Veerendra / Dr Anita and their entire staff. I feel blessed that they did everything to ensure to get properly diagnosed. Despite weekend and extremely busy schedules and Covid special time, they took utmost care and managed competing priorities. We are falling short of words but still trying our best to express gratitude. We are truly blessed & thankful for early diagnosis. Thank you so so much and we will do my best to follow your advice to the T. You guys are amazing and we surely recommend this place a modern temple to get your periodic proactive eye check ups or any other ophthalmic issues. Way to go!”

“The staff and doctors were very nice and there was not a very long wait time. Great organization and system in the hospital. All the eye tests were super easy to understand and were done efficiently. The doctors were very gentle and caring giving tissues whenever needed and checking if you are ok. I definitely would recommend this hospital for any eye problems or even just a checkup. My doctor was Dr. Neha Patak, she was extremely soft spoken and really caring. Salik was very gentle when lifting eyelids and that was very much appreciated.”
