NEURO-OPHTHALMOLOGY

Optic Nerve Disorders

The optic nerve carries visual information from the retina to the brain. Inflammation, reduced blood supply, pressure, compression, glaucoma, nutritional deficiency or inherited conditions can disturb this pathway. Unlike ordinary spectacle power, optic-nerve damage may affect clarity even after the best lens correction.

Possible symptoms include dim or blurred vision, colours appearing washed out, pain on eye movement, a central blind spot or loss of side vision. One or both eyes may be involved. The pattern, speed of onset, age and associated medical history help narrow the possible causes.

Assessment and diagnosis

Testing includes best-corrected vision, colour vision, pupil responses, visual fields and close examination of the optic disc. Optical coherence tomography measures retinal nerve-fibre layers and supports follow-up. MRI may be required for inflammation or compression, while blood tests are selected when infection, inflammation, nutritional deficiency or an arteritic cause is suspected.

Treatment and practical care

Treatment is diagnosis-specific. Inflammatory disease may require steroids or other specialist-directed medicines; compression may need neurosurgical or orbital review; vascular disease requires attention to diabetes, blood pressure and other risks. Glaucoma treatment lowers eye pressure. Some inherited or longstanding disorders are managed with monitoring, rehabilitation and practical visual support.

Follow-up and expectations

Repeat visual fields and nerve imaging help show whether damage is stable or progressing. Patients should bring previous scans because comparison is often more informative than a single result. Follow-up intervals depend on the suspected cause and may be short when vision is changing.

Risks and limitations

Established optic-nerve loss is not always reversible. Treatment may protect remaining vision or address an active cause without restoring every lost function. Tests also have natural variability, so results are interpreted together rather than in isolation. Early evaluation matters when changes are sudden.

Every eye is different. The right procedure is the one that fits your cornea, your lens, your retina and the way you use your vision every day — not the one that is most advertised. Technology supports the decision; it never replaces the clinical evaluation.

Despite weekend and extremely busy schedules and Covid special time, they took utmost care and managed competing priorities. We are falling short of words but still trying our best to express gratitude. We are truly blessed & thankful for early diagnosis. Thank you so so much and we will do my best to follow your advice to the T. You guys are amazing and we surely recommend this place a modern temple to get your periodic proactive eye check ups or any other ophthalmic issues. Way to go!”

“The staff and doctors were very nice and there was not a very long wait time. Great organization and system in the hospital. All the eye tests were super easy to understand and were done efficiently. The doctors were very gentle and caring giving tissues whenever needed and checking if you are ok. I definitely would recommend this hospital for any eye problems or even just a checkup. My doctor was Dr. Neha Patak, she was extremely soft spoken and really caring. Salik was very gentle when lifting eyelids and that was very much appreciated.”
