RLE – Specs Removal After 40
Reading glasses, bifocals and changing prescriptions can become frustrating after 40. Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) offers selected adults an opportunity to reduce spectacle dependence by replacing the eye’s natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).
Who may consider RLE?
RLE may suit some patients with age-related near-vision difficulty or prescriptions unsuitable for laser correction or an Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL).
Being over 40 or ineligible for another procedure does not automatically make RLE appropriate. Your surgeon assesses your prescription, remaining natural focusing ability, retinal health and everyday visual needs.
How does it work?
The surgeon removes the natural lens through a small incision and inserts a carefully selected IOL. The technique resembles cataract surgery, but its purpose is to correct vision before a significant cataract develops.
Removing the natural lens permanently removes its remaining ability to change focus.
Which lens can be used?
- Monofocal lenses: Usually provide one main focus; glasses are commonly needed at other distances.
- Extended-depth-of-focus lenses: Extend the useful focusing range, particularly towards intermediate vision.
- Multifocal or trifocal lenses: Provide multiple focal distances but may cause halos or glare.
- Toric options: Address suitable corneal astigmatism.
