Flap-free laser vision correction with ZEISS MEL 90
PRK / Epi-LASIK / Surface Ablation at Perfect Vision Laser Eye Hospital, Jaipur
Laser corneal reshaping • No LASIK-style flap • An option for selected thinner corneas
Surface ablation can help reduce dependence on spectacles and contact lenses without creating a deeper corneal flap. At Perfect Vision Laser Eye Hospital – Dr. Virendra Laser Phaco Surgery Centre, Jaipur, PRK and Epi-LASIK use the ZEISS MEL 90 excimer laser to reshape the cornea according to your prescription and eye measurements.
What is surface ablation?
Surface ablation describes procedures in which the cornea’s thin outer covering—the epithelium—is removed or separated before laser reshaping. The surface then heals, usually with protection from a temporary bandage contact lens.
The techniques differ mainly in how this outer layer is prepared.

PRK
PRK stands for Photorefractive Keratectomy. The surgeon removes the epithelium before applying the excimer laser to the tissue beneath. The outer layer grows back during recovery.
Epi-LASIK
Epi-LASIK uses a specialised instrument called an epikeratome to separate the epithelium. The epithelial sheet may be removed or repositioned. It does not create a LASIK-style corneal flap.
Is surface ablation completely touch-less?
The laser reshapes the cornea without a blade. However, conventional PRK and Epi-LASIK involve a separate epithelial preparation step.
TransPRK, often called “no-touch PRK,” uses laser energy for both epithelial removal and corneal reshaping. This term should only describe the specific technique being performed; using an excimer laser alone does not make every surface procedure touch-less.
Can it suit thinner corneas?
Surface ablation may be considered for selected patients whose corneas are thinner but otherwise healthy, because it avoids creating a LASIK flap.
Thickness alone does not determine safety. Corneal shape, prescription and the amount of tissue remaining after treatment must also be assessed. Keratoconus or suspicious scans may rule out elective laser correction.
Who may be suitable?
- Adults with a stable prescription.
- Patients with suitable corneal measurements and healthy eyes.
- People whose activities make avoiding a LASIK flap desirable.
- Patients comfortable with a gradual recovery.
Benefits and recovery
Treatment aims to improve unaided vision while avoiding LASIK flap-related complications.
Recovery is generally slower than LASIK. Discomfort, watering and light sensitivity may occur initially, with vision improving progressively over subsequent weeks. Follow prescribed drops, attend reviews and follow advice about ultraviolet protection.

“23 years back , I got my eyes operated for Lasik laser surgery. Being among the few ones who were being operated for the eyes and at that time, this being a new technique for removal of specs, It was a wonderful experience with Dr Virendra Agarwal operating .I ,being the first one to be operated that day, all other patients were quite relaxed after listening from me that how easily the operation was done successfully by Dr sb and now, I stand here 23 yrs later with perfect eyes and vision. Thanks Dr Virendra Agarwal for being such a wonderful Dr and caring for the lifeline of everyone i.e. Our Eyes.”
“My experience at the Virendra Agrawal Eye hospital has been good . Got my lasik surgery 7 years back , eyes has perfect as of now. DR Agarwal and his working staff is polite . They are equipped with all the necessary machinery in the field of ophthalmology and I highly recommend Mr Agarwal's clinic. Couple of things which would even improve their service - 1.A water cooler with disposable glasses 2.Written note on the reception about the discount to the government employees for consultation fees. " Clinic is taking all the precautionary measures in the prevention of COVID19 "”

A special mention to Komal and Saliq bhaiya for being so helpful and patient. Thank you to the entire team for such great care.”
