These changes commonly develop after 40 because of presbyopia—the gradual loss of the natural lens’s ability to focus on nearby objects.
ZEISS PRESBYOND Laser Blended Vision offers a personalised laser treatment for suitable adults who want to reduce their dependence on glasses for everyday activities.
What is PRESBYOND?
PRESBYOND is a LASIK-based vision correction treatment designed to help your eyes work together across near, intermediate and distance vision.
It reshapes the cornea—the transparent front surface of the eye—using the ZEISS MEL 90 excimer laser, guided by dedicated PRESBYOND treatment-planning software.
Your natural lens remains in place. The treatment compensates for reduced near focusing; it does not restore the lens’s youthful flexibility or stop age-related changes.
How does Laser Blended Vision work?
PRESBYOND combines two elements:
An extended range of focus
A personalised laser profile changes the cornea’s optical properties to increase the range over which each eye can provide useful focus.
A small difference between the eyes
Usually, the dominant eye is targeted more towards distance and the other eye towards near vision. This difference is tailored to your tolerance.
The overlapping ranges create a “blend zone,” particularly useful for intermediate tasks such as computer work. Your brain combines information from both eyes to support everyday vision.
The aim is useful vision with both eyes together. Each eye is not expected to see every distance equally clearly on its own.
Who may be suitable?
PRESBYOND may be considered for adults with presbyopia who:
- Have a stable spectacle prescription.
- Have suitable corneal thickness, shape and tear-film health.
- Have healthy eyes without a visually significant cataract.
- Can tolerate the planned focusing difference between the eyes.
- Understand that occasional glasses may still be necessary.
Selected patients with short-sightedness, long-sightedness or astigmatism may qualify. People with good distance vision who mainly need reading glasses may also be considered.
What happens during your assessment?
Your surgeon checks your prescription, corneal measurements, natural lens and retinal health. Additional tests assess eye dominance, how your eyes work together and your tolerance of the proposed focusing balance.
Your reading distance, screen use, night driving and work requirements help guide treatment planning.
What happens during treatment?
- 1Preparation: Anaesthetic eye drops numb the eyes.
- 2Flap creation: A thin LASIK flap is created in the cornea.
- 3Laser reshaping: The MEL 90 applies the personalised treatment beneath the flap.
- 4Completion: The surgeon repositions the flap and checks the eye.
- 5Aftercare: Prescribed drops and follow-up appointments support healing.
