CATARACT AND ASTIGMATISM IN ONE PLAN
Toric IOLs for measured corneal astigmatism
A toric IOL combines cataract replacement with cylindrical correction at a planned axis. Accurate measurement, alignment and stable post-operative position are essential.
1. Toric planning measurements
Repeatable corneal astigmatism and surface quality
Posterior corneal contribution and surgically induced astigmatism
Biometry, lens power and intended axis
2. The toric workflow
Verify the cylinder
Measurements are repeated and ocular-surface problems treated before the final calculation.
Plan and align
The lens model, cylinder power and axis are selected before surgery and alignment is checked during implantation.
Confirm stability
Post-operative review checks refraction and whether the lens remains at the intended axis.
3. Why alignment matters
Axis-specific correction
The cylindrical effect works best when positioned at the planned meridian.
Rotation reduces effect
A rotated lens may leave residual astigmatism and occasionally needs repositioning.
Toric is not multifocal
Toric corrects astigmatism; its focus range depends on whether the model is monofocal, EDOF or multifocal.
4. Limitations
- Residual cylinder can remain
- Irregular corneal astigmatism may not suit a toric IOL
- Spectacles may still be required for near or fine distance correction

Every eye is different. The right procedure is the one that fits your cornea, your lens, your retina and the way you use your vision every day — not the one that is most advertised. Technology supports the decision; it never replaces the clinical evaluation.
