A CLEAR PRIORITY DISTANCE
Monofocal IOLs and predictable focus planning
A monofocal IOL is designed around one focal distance, commonly distance. It offers a straightforward optical strategy, while near and sometimes intermediate tasks usually need spectacles.
1. What is chosen—not just the lens
Target distance for each eye
Corneal astigmatism and whether a toric model is needed
Retinal health and realistic spectacle expectations
2. Monofocal planning
Measure lens power
Optical biometry and corneal measurements are checked for consistency.
Agree the target
Distance, near or a modest eye-to-eye difference may be discussed according to lifestyle and tolerance.
Review refraction
After healing, residual power is measured and task-specific spectacles are prescribed if useful.
3. Why patients choose monofocal optics
Single-focus design
It avoids deliberate splitting of light into several focal points.
Flexible spectacle plan
Glasses can provide precise near or intermediate focus after surgery.
Wide clinical use
It may remain suitable when retinal or corneal findings make multifocal optics less attractive.
4. Limitations
- Reading glasses are commonly required after a distance target
- Residual astigmatism can blur unaided vision
- One-focus optics do not reproduce natural accommodation

Every eye is different. The right procedure is the one that fits your cornea, your lens, your retina and the way you use your vision every day — not the one that is most advertised. Technology supports the decision; it never replaces the clinical evaluation.
