Refractive error means the eye does not focus light clearly. Children may compensate or use one eye more than the other, so symptoms and school screening alone can miss important power.
1. Signs that deserve an examination
Sitting close, holding work near or squeezing the eyes
Headache, short attention for near work or avoiding reading
One eye turning, closing one eye or unequal school-screen results

Unaided and corrected vision
Each eye is tested separately with symbols or methods suited to the child’s age.
Cycloplegic refraction
Drops temporarily relax focusing to reveal the underlying power accurately.
Eye-health examination
The cornea, lens, retina and alignment are checked so spectacles are not prescribed in isolation.
3. Different powers, different priorities
Myopia
Distance blur may progress during growth and can require a myopia-management discussion.
Hypermetropia
Children may hide plus power by focusing; significant power can contribute to strain or inward squint.
Astigmatism
Blur occurs across distances and uncorrected astigmatism can contribute to amblyopia.
