Care for eye misalignment in children and adults
Squint Evaluation and Surgery in Jaipur
Squint, or strabismus, occurs when the eyes do not point in the same direction. It may be present continuously or appear intermittently, affecting one eye or alternating between eyes.
At Perfect Vision Laser Eye Hospital – Dr. Virendra Laser Phaco Surgery Centre, Jaipur, treatment begins with identifying the type, cause and effect on vision.
Types of squint
Squints are commonly classified by the direction of misalignment:
Esotropia
An eye turns inward towards the nose. Examples include infantile esotropia, beginning in early infancy, and accommodative esotropia, associated with the focusing effort in long-sighted children.
Exotropia
An eye turns outward. Intermittent exotropia may become noticeable when tired, daydreaming or looking into the distance.
Hypertropia
One eye sits higher than the other.
Hypotropia
One eye sits lower than the other.
Squints may also be described by their cause. Paralytic squint involves weakness of an eye-movement nerve; restrictive squint involves restricted muscle movement; sensory squint develops in association with reduced vision.

Symptoms and warning signs
Signs include visible eye turning, double vision, closing one eye, head tilting and difficulty judging distances. Children may not report double vision because the brain can suppress the image from one eye, potentially contributing to amblyopia, or lazy eye.
What does evaluation include?
Your specialist checks vision in each eye, spectacle power, eye movements, alignment at near and distance, and how the eyes work together. Children may need drops to measure their prescription accurately. Further investigations depend on the findings.
Treatment options
- Glasses: Can correct some squints, particularly accommodative esotropia.
- Amblyopia treatment: Prescribed patching or atropine may improve weaker-eye vision.
- Prisms: May relieve double vision in selected patients.
- Exercises: Help specific coordination problems; they are not a treatment for every squint.
- Surgery: Adjusts eye muscles when indicated.
How does squint surgery work?
The surgeon repositions or changes the effective strength of selected eye muscles. One or both eyes may require treatment. Children usually receive general anaesthesia.
Surgery aims to improve alignment and, where possible, binocular function or double vision.
Recovery and risks
Temporary redness, watering and discomfort are common. Follow prescribed drops and activity advice. Risks include undercorrection, overcorrection, recurrent squint, persistent double vision and infection; serious vision loss is rare.

Every eye is different. The right procedure is the one that fits your cornea, your lens, your retina and the way you use your vision every day — not the one that is most advertised. Technology supports the decision; it never replaces the clinical evaluation.
