Cataract surgery when you have diabetes: extra checks that protect your result

The retina decides how much vision is achievable

In diabetes, the clarity of vision after surgery depends heavily on the macula. Diabetic macular oedema or advanced retinopathy limits the result no matter which lens is implanted, so a dilated retinal examination and, where indicated, retinal imaging are done before surgery.

Stabilising the eye before operating

Where active retinopathy or macular oedema is present, retinal treatment may be advised before or alongside cataract surgery. Blood sugar and blood pressure control also influence healing and infection risk.

Lens selection is more conservative

Multifocal and trifocal designs are often avoided when the macula is affected, because contrast is already reduced. A monofocal or toric monofocal lens is frequently the more dependable recommendation.

Follow-up continues after surgery

Diabetic eyes are monitored for macular oedema and pressure changes in the weeks after surgery, and annual retinal screening continues lifelong.
